NOVI SAD (FIBA U19 World Championship) - Milan Macvan poured in 36 points to lead Serbia to an 87-75 victory over Brazil in the eighth-finals of the FIBA U19 World Championship on Monday.
The Brazilians edged a tight opening, coming back from 13-8 down to find themselves 22-21 up at the end of the first quarter.
The host nation asserted themselves after that, however, with Macvan leading the charge in the second period.
At 24-23 down, the 17-year-old power forward inspired a run of eight points without reply to establish a seven-point cushion for his side.
Brazil battled back to reduce the deficit to three points, but Serbia had pulled away again by the break to earn a 10-point gap at 44-34.
That advantage was stretched in the third, with Macvan again influential as Serbia moved 67-55 clear after half an hour's play. That gap was maintained in the
fourth, which was tied 20-20.
Mladen Jeremic and Stefan Markovic also made noteworthy contributions for the victors with 19 and 14 points respectively.
Betinho Duarte contributed 22 points and Paulao Prestes 20 in a losing cause for Brazil.
