The American-born Brian Goorjian came to Australia in 1977 to play for the Melbourne Tigers. He was appointed as head coach of the East Side Melbourne Spectres in 1988 and won two national titles with this team.

In 1998, he took the reins of the Sydney Kings and has claimed three consecutive titles between 2003 and 2005. He is currently regarded as Australia's most successful basketball coach and is only the second head man to have coached more than 600 games in the NBL.

In 2003, after the National Team failed to qualify for the 2002 FIBA World Championship, he succeeded Phyl Smith at the head of the Boomers and led them to a ninth place at the Athens Olympic Games.
