2005 was the "Year of the Dragon" for Greek basketball. Panagiotis Yannakis, the man who wrote his own history as a player with the Greek National Team, became one of the few men in the history of baskteball to win a EuroBasket gold medal as a player and as a coach.
Eighteen years went by between 1987 and 2005. And that's almost the age of Yannakis' son, Dimitri, who is now a basketball player. After last year's triumph, Yannakis became perhaps the most famous sportsman in Greece - even more famous then 1987 hero Nick Galis.
Still, Yannakis is low profile person who admires team spirit and has a passion for the Greek flag. He was, is and will always be, as he calls it: "a soldier of the National Team".
Yannakis will coach in his second FIBA World Championships, after the 1998 tournament held in Athens. At that time he was his rookie on the bench. Now, Yannakis is the reigning European Champion and a man everyone in the world respects!
