Nestor Salazar was a good volleyball player when he was young but a meniscus injury stopped him at 18.

Then he became a basketball coach and worked with children. Since the 1980s, he has coached at all levels from children to seniors.

In 1999, he was appointed to the head of the Venezuelan junior National Team before taking the reins of the Senior National Team four years later.

He has also coached several teams in both the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto (LNB) and the Liga Profesional de Baloncesto (LPB).

Last season, he won the LNB title with Guerreros de Caracas. Salazar also led Guaros de Lara twice to the final in the LPB in 2005 and 2006. He is nicknamed Mama Osa and is considered the symbol of Venezuelan basketball.
