Claude Bergeaud had a tough task at hand when he took over the French national team. After three straight disappointing EuroBasket performances, two of them marked by a tragic ending (not really results wise: 4th, 6th and 4th, but more in the manner) France needed someone to start anew, basically from scratch. That's what Bergeaud did, bringing his touch to a renewed selection.

Bergeaud, who had proven himself by winning three French leagues with Pau-Orthez, was all about values, most of them team oriented. He wanted to create an atmosphere in which players would miss during the rest of the year. And he managed to do just that. In September 2004, one year after France had failed to win a bronze medal at EuroBasket 2003 and qualify for Athens Olympic Games, by not playing the 3rd place final against an Italian team plagued by injuries, Bergeaud brought a unique atmosphere into the National Team.

Even without Tony Parker and a few other stars, the qualifications for EuroBasket 2005 were a real success, enough to make the French press and fans fall in love again with their National Team. With Boris Diaw, Bergeaud found just the right player to emphasize the values the coach worships. Bergeaud was also able to find the right balance between Diaw and Tony Parker, the two leaders of the team, winning Bronze at EuroBasket 2005 - the European medal for France in 46 years.
