El Kabir Pène is the regular backup for starting playmaker Babacar Cissé. Péne did not have a lot of international experience before the 2005 FIBA Africa Championship. At the time, he was one of the few players from the domestic league, playing for Gorée.

But Péne possesses a good rhythm on offence and produced in the playing time given to him by coach N'Diaye. After a tough year in the French league, Péne returns to the National Team with more confidence in his game.
