Andrew Bogut is the new superstar of Australian basketball. Selected with the first pick overall in the 2005 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, he put together a solid rookie season, averaging 9.4 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game and finishing third in the selection for the NBA Rookie of the Year.

Bogut was born in Australia but has Croatian roots and is a fan of Croatian legend Drazen Petrovic. Bogut learned the fundamentals of basketball at the Australian Institute of Sports and won the 2003 FIBA U19 World Championship before committing to the University of Utah. Two years with the Utah (20.4 pts and 12.2 rbs per game in his sophomore year) were enough for him to show that he deserved to play in the NBA.

In 2004, National Team coach Brian Goorjian decided to bring his 20-year-old prodigy to the Olympic Games to acquire experience. Bogut averaged 13.7 points and 9.0 rebounds, revealing himself as the leader of the new Australian generation. He will be one of the big stars at the 2006 FIBA World Championship.
