Once considered lost for the National Team, Frederic Weis made an unexpected comeback last year at the EuroBasket 2005. Coming in at the very end of the training phase because of Vincent Masingue's injury, Weis was coming off a disappointing season with Bilbao. But he had an impact right from the start and his influence grew steadily. After most had forgotten about his amazing potential, Weis became the intimidating defensive center France needed. He would later say that he was finally playing freely after so many years of second guessing his every move. It showed this season in Bilbao, where he had his best Spanish year so far. Drafted by the New York Knicks (#15) in the first round of the 1999 Draft, he played poorly during the summer league, which granted him the unpleasant nickname of "French Toast" given by the ferocious New York City press. He is also remembered worldwide as "the guy Vince Carter jumped over" on his famous dunk during Sydney's Olympic Games. But bad luck, injuries and unfairness have always remained for Frédéric, as few remember that after Carter's dunk, Weis was the main reason France beat Canada and Australia on its way to winning the Olympic silver medal.
