Carlos Arroyo became a legend of Puerto Rican basketball on August 15, 2004 when Puerto Rico defeated the United States 92-73 at the 2004 Olympic Games as he scored 24 points and dished seven assists. Arroyo is not the first Puerto Rican player in the NBA but has been the most successful. After attending the University of Florida International, he went undrafted but signed a free agent contract with the Toronto Raptors. He played 17 games before being waived, and after three months in Spain, he returned to the NBA to finish the season with the Denver Nuggets. In 2002, he was signed by the Utah Jazz and once John Stockton retired became the starting point guard, averaging 12.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game during the 2003-04 season. But he was traded to the Detroit Pistons in the middle of the following season. He played in the NBA Finals but lost to San Antonio in seven games.

This season, he was traded to the Orlando Magic and posted 10.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. At 26, he is the uncontested leader of the national team.
