BEIRUT (WABA Championship/2011 FIBA Asia Championship) - Sam Vincent, a former head coach of NBA's Charlotte Bobcats, has signed on to take charge of Lebanon's Men's National Team for the 2011 season.
According to sources, Vincent will be in charge of Lebanon until the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship that will take place in Wuhan, China, between 15 and 25 September.
His future beyond that point will depend on the team’s performance in Wuhan.
Lebanon earned an automatic qualification for the 26th FIBA Asia Championship after winning the 3rd FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup in Beirut last year.
For that reason, the country will send a development team to the 2011 WABA Championship in Duhok, Iraq later this month (21-25 June).
Lebanon's main team is expected to head to Belarus for its initial training camp.
Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province in China, will play host to 16 top teams from five different FIBA Asia sub-zones to identify the champion men’s team of FIBA Asia.
The champions in Wuhan will directly qualify for the London Olympics, while teams finishing second and third will qualify for the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament.
Vincent has coached a number of underdog national teams to impressive results.
At the 2004 Athens Olympics, he was in charge of Nigeria's women’s team that beat Korea for the first ever victory by an African nation in Olympic women’s basketball competition.
Two years later, Vincent coached Nigeria's men’s team to the second round of the 2006 FIBA World Championship including a shock win over traditional powerhouse Serbia and Montenegro.
