UMGUNGUNDLOVU (Engen Under-18 Inter-Provincial Tournament) - South African basketball fans get a glimpse of the country's next generation of elite players when teams converge in Umgungundlovu for the Engen Under-18 Inter-Provincial Tournament this week.
Playing on home ground at the Pietermaritzburg YMCA Sports Centre, KwaZulu-Natal province start as firm favorites to defend the boy's title they won last year.
While Gauteng province are expected to fight tooth and nail to retain the girl's title. This will be the second edition of the national event.
"It is not only the national team selectors who will be busy seizing up the players.
"We have a host of scouts from various colleges and universities in the United States and Europe who are on the lookout for fresh talent," says Sabata Thekiso, the Basketball South Africa (BSA) Media Manager.
Perhaps the most prominent of these scouts are the American quartet of Marvin Harvey and Kevin Cooke who are former coaches with the American women's professional side Houston Comets, Marcy Myers of Colorado State University and Joyce Jenkins of the US Air Force Basketball.
They shared their vast experience with youngsters at coaching clinics they held last week at the Huntersville Sports Complex in Katlehong townships in Gauteng province.
Moving to the Western Cape province they held similar clinics at Steenberg High School in Cape Town and at Sivuyiseni Primary School in Nyanga Township.
While yesterday Monday they conducted their fourth clinic here in KwaZului-Natal province at the Pietermaritzburg YMCA Sports Centre.
