AMBATO (Liga Sudamericana) - Penarol climbed out of a giant hole on Thursday night against Importadora Alvarado and won 98-85 to advance to the Semi-Final Round of the Liga Sudamericana.
The Argentina club, which split its first two games in Preliminary Round Group C, looked as if it would be crashing to a heavy defeat in Ecuador when trailing 56-36 with 3:50 remaining in the second quarter.
Penarol started their comeback and reduced the arrears to 58-43 by half-time.
Franco Giorgietti drilled a go-ahead three-pointer in the last minute of the third quarter to put the visitors on top, 68-66, and they took the lead for good with 8:29 to go on another basket by Giorgetti.
Giorgetti had a game-high 29 points for the Mar del Plata club.
As is usually the case for all the teams he plays on, Argentina national team point guard Facundo Campazzo was central to the Penarol success.
He finished with 24 points, nine assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Campazzo, an important member of Argentina's squad at the 2012 Olympics and this summer's FIBA Americas Championship, connected on five of his six attempts from long range.
For Importadora Alvarado, Raul Cardenas scored 28 points and Hiram Fuller 23.
Sao Jose of Brazil, who beat Penarol 95-92 in their game on Tuesday, finished first in Group C.
They won all three of their games in the Preliminary Round, signing off with a 93-73 rout of Bucaros.
Other teams in the Semi-Final Round are Uniceub BRB and Boca Juniors, who finished first and second in Group A, and Bauru (first) and Caquetios (second) from Group B.
The other two sides to advance will come out of a Group D that includes Argentino de Junin, Aguada, El Bosque and Guacharos.
