AfroBasket - Nigeria beat Cameroon to stay perfect, defending champs Tunisia survive again

ABIDJAN (AfroBasket/FIBA Basketball World Cup) - In the most highly-anticipated game of AfroBasket 2013 to date, between two potential tournament winners, Nigeria could not make it more clear that the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup is very much on their mind as they beat Cameroon 91-84 in the last game on Day 6.

Christian Bayang had 20 points and Luc Mbah a Moute added 18 for Cameroon, but the night belonged to Ike Diogu who had a game-high 25 points to go with 15 rebounds and two blocks for one of the standout performances of the tournament so far.

Cameroon led 40-39 at the break, but Nigeria edged them out in the second half to remain perfect and top Group B while Cameroon finished second.

In the final game of Group A, defending champions Tunisia also improved to 3-0 but needed overtime to beat a resolute Rwanda team that wasted an astonishing chance of achieving their most famous victory in AfroBasket history.

Tunisia prevailed 83-81, despite trailing at the break (41-39), and at the end of the third quarter (61-59).

As Rwanda's fans celebrated, the worst was still to come when Kami Kabangu turned the ball over with four seconds remaining which Tunisian forward Macram Ben Romdhane converted into a lay-up that tied the score at 74 to send the contest into an extra period.

Salah Mejri secured the win with yet another easy lay-up as Tunisia increased their AfroBasket winning streak to 11 wins in a row.

In the game's opening game, Moussa Ouattara had a game-high 25 points for Burkina Faso but it wasn't enough for the AfroBasket debutants as they lost 84-63 to Morocco, suffering their third consecutive defeat in the tournament.

In the second game, the Republic of Congo (CGO) beat Mali 87-77 to secure third place in Group D.

Giovan Oniangue had game-high 31 points as Republic of Congo secured an historic result. Their last victory at an AfroBasket prior to this one dated back to 1985 when they trounced Kenya 118-61.

Sunday's action concluded the Preliminary Round of the tournament which now enters into a Knockout Round, starting with the Eight-Finals to be played on Monday and Tuesday.

On Monday, Morocco take on Algeria, Cameroon face Mozambique, hosts Cote d'Ivoire will square off against Burkina Faso and Angola play Mali.

Then on Tuesday, Tunisia square off against Egypt, Cape Verde tackle the Republic of Congo, Senegal meet Rwanda and Nigeria will bring the Eighth-Finals to a close with a clash against Central African Republic.
