MADRID (Liga Endesa/Euroleague) – Spain international Felipe Reyes isn't known for scoring explosions like compatriots Juan Carlos Navarro of Barcelona and Pau Gasol of the Los Angeles Lakers.
The best way to describe the 32-year-old power forward and captain of Real Madrid might be to say that he is dependable.
Reyes’ coaches, teammates and fans know what to expect when he hits the court.
His 3,473 rebounds are the third most in A.C.B. (Liga Endesa) history behind Granger Hall (4,292) and former Spain captain, Reyes’ ex-Estudiantes teammate Carlos Jimenez (3,526).
In fact, Reyes is 22 rebounds shy of becoming the fifth player to claim 1,000 rebounds in his Euroleague career.
Perhaps most impressive of all is that Reyes always shows up for work, be it for club or country.
He became, after last weekend's game at Uxue Bilbao Basket, the currently active player who has competed in the most games in the Spanish A.C.B. (Liga Endesa)
His 532 appearances are more than the 531 of his close friend Navarro for Barcelona, who fell into second place when he didn't feature in Barca’s win at Manresa.
Both figure to compete for a long time still, so the number of games played by each will increase substantially.
Only 13 players throughout history have appeared in more ACB games than Reyes.
Rafa Jofresa holds the record with 756.
Nacho Rodriguez (737), Nacho Azofra (705), Alberto Herreros (654), Carlos Jimenez (641), Pablo Laso (624), Juan Antonio Orenga (615), Carlos Montes (605), Jose Miguel Antunez (601), Joan Creus (585), José Angel Arcega (582), Jose Antonio Paraiso (551) and Alberto Angulo (542) follow, with Reyes next in line.
What makes Reyes’ accomplishment stand out even more is that his body has been able to withstand the wear and tear of long seasons which also include games in the Copa del Rey, and European club competitions.
He will be with Real Madrid this weekend at the Copa del Rey in Vitoria.
Reyes, along with Navarro and Gasol, were in the Spain side that won the 1999 World Championship for Junior Men.
That trio has played a huge role in catapulting the Spaniards to the number two spot in the FIBA Rankings Men.
If the three play for hosts Spain at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, it will be cause for celebration.
