OLYM - USA beat Argentina, for repeat of Beijing final

LONDON (Olympics) - The United States pulled away from Argentina in the second half on Friday night and won 109-83 to set up a re-match with Spain in the Olympic Final.

Leading 51-46 with 7:51 to go in the third quarter after a Manu Ginobili three-point play for Argentina, the USA took total control of the contest.

Kevin Durant drilled two three-pointers as part of an 8-0 run to make it 59-46.

After an Andres Nocioni three-ball and a short jumper from Ginobili reduced the arrears to 59-51 for Argentina, LeBron James scored five straight points, including a huge dunk, to make it 64-51 in favor of the Americans.

"It definitely gave us some momentum, that dunk, and then he came back and had an offensive rebound and put-back," said Carmelo Anthony after the game.

"Then he hit another shot. He got it going. So we fed off that energy."

Mike Krzyzewski's team went on to lead 74-57 by the end of the third quarter and cruised the rest of the way.

The United States surpassed the 100-point mark for the fifth time at the London Games.

"Their team is better than ours," said Luis Scola.

"I’m not being smart in saying that, everyone knows it."

"When you play against the US, you just need to play a perfect game. And we weren’t perfect."

Durant had four three-balls in the fourth quarter and finished with 19 points and Anthony hit four shots from the arc in the final frame – including three in a row - and finished with 18 points.

The Americans' three-point shooting has been a feature in this tournament, with successful flurries opening up big gaps at pivotal moments.

"You got three scorers in this team that get blistering hot," explained Kobe Bryant.

"Melo made three shots in a row. I’ve never seen anything like it."

“Me, KD and Melo made three 3s in a row and all of a sudden, the floodgates opened."

“Suddenly a 10-point lead turned into a 20-point lead very, very quickly.”

While America are now just one victory away from a successful Olympic title defense, Argentina will attempt to win the bronze medal again.

After beating Lithuania in the battle for third place in Beijing, they will go up against Russia on Sunday.

Ginobili had 18 points and both Luis Scola and Carlos Delfino 15 for Argentina.
