EUROCUP – Thrilling final week set for Last 16

ANKARA (Eurocup) - Gran Canaria and CEZ Nymburk both won on Tuesday night to leave three Group L sides in the chase for Eurocup Quarter-Final spots with one week remaining in the Last 16.

Jaycee Carroll made a pair of free-throws in the final seconds as the Spanish team won 79-78 at Turk Telekom.

The American guard had a game-high 22 points, including a perfect nine-of-nine effort at the charity stripe.

Czech international Petr Benda led a balanced Nymburk attack with 18 points and seven rebounds in a 73-55 triumph at Red Star Belgrade.

Red Star, Nymburk and Gran Canaria are 3-2 and all have a chance to advance while Turk Telekom are 1-4 and already eliminated.

“Now all is in our own hands,” said Nymburk coach Muli Katzurin, whose side takes on Turk Telekom next week.

“One more game in the group remains and I believe we will continue in the Eurocup competition."

Red Star still have a chance of progressing but they need a victory in the Canary Islands in their last game.

Gran Canaria and Nymburk split the two meetings between the sides but the former would advance if both were to lose next week thanks to a +7 superior goal differential in the games between the sides.

The Czechs, however, will reach the Quarter-Finals no matter what if Red Star lose at Gran Canaria as Tuesday’s comprehensive win in Belgrade has given them a better goal differential after two games with the Serbian side.

Aris, who are coached by Russia national team boss David Blatt, put their defeat at Trikala in Greece at the weekend behind them and prevailed for the third straight time in Eurocup Group I with an 84-54 demolition of DKV Joventut.

Jeremy Richardson poured in 19 points and recent signing Matt Walsh 17 for Aris, who out-rebounded DKV 40-27.

Nothing has been decided in this pool as both Aris and DKV are 3-2, while Alba Berlin are 2-2 going into their home game against Le Mans (1-3) on Wednesday evening.

Sito Alonso, the DKV Joventut boss, said: "You never expect to lose by that much.

"But Aris has a lot of high-level players and a very good coach.

"I can't understand how this team holds a low position in the Greek League standings."

Aris are ninth in the Greek top flight.

In Group J, Croatia's Marko Popovic scored 22 points and Poland's Maciej Lampe contributed 19 as Unics Kazan (3-2) scraped a 92-89 home victory over Galatasaray (0-5).

"Now that we have chances to qualify for the Quarter-Finals, we will without a doubt do our best to win the game in Valencia," Lampe said.

Power Electronics Valencia (4-1) avenged their home setback to Hapoel Jerusalem (3-2) by winning in Israel, 69-64.

Thomas Kelati caught fire from long range, making five of eight on his way to 17 points for Valencia.

Should Valencia fall at home to Unics and Hapoel win against Galatasaray, then the Spanish, Russian and Israeli sides would each be 4-2.

A tie-breaker taking into consideration the results of the games between Valencia, Unics and Hapoel would be used to determine the order of finish.

Brose Baskets Bamberg (2-3) defeated Panellinios BC 84-81, but the Greek outfit (3-2) still clinched a spot in the last eight.

Casey Jacobsen scored 25 points and Predrag Suput contributed 12 points and eight rebounds for the winners.

New signing Mark Worthington of Australia poured in 10 points and pulled down six rebounds for Bamberg.

Bizkaia Bilbao Basket (4-1) suffered their first Eurocup setback of the campaign, falling 72-68 at home to Benetton Treviso (1-4).

The Spanish side had already sealed a place in the Quarter-Finals.
