ATHENS (Euroleague) - Lithuania sharpshooter Linas Kleiza connected on four shots from long range and scored a game-high 20 points to lead Olympiacos past Lietuvos Rytas in the Euroleague on Wednesday night.
Kleiza, taking on one of his native land's leading clubs, also had six rebounds as the Greek giants prevailed 97-73 to improve to 2-1.
Fans in Lithuania are hoping their country will receive a wild card to take part in the 2010 FIBA World Championship, and if they do Kleiza will probably make the trip to Turkey under new coach Kestutis Kemzura.
The 24-year-old struggled at the EuroBasket in Poland, averaging just 8.8 points and 23 minutes per game.
Kleiza made just three of 17 shots from long range and Lithuania crashed out of the competition in the Qualifying Round with a come-from-behind triumph over Bulgaria their only win.
Back in Europe after playing for the Denver Nuggets, Kleiza has averaged 17.7 points and 7.7 rebounds in three Euroleague games.
Asked about his performance after the win over Lietuvos Rytas, Kleiza said: "I feel happy whenever the team wins no matter how many points I have scored.
"It's always nice to score a lot, but the important thing is to win the games.
"We have such a deep roster that I don't have to worry who's going to score the points.
"All the guys can contribute."
One of those guys was Josh Childress, who poured in 18 points for Olympiacos on Wednesday.
Three Greece national team players featured for the Reds and the most impressive was Theo Papaloukas, who rested this year and didn’t play at the EuroBasket.
The veteran playmaker had seven points, four assists and four steals.
Panagiotis Vasilopoulos, who missed the EuroBasket this year due to an injury, had nine points with four boards in more than 18 minutes.
The other Greek, man mountain Sofoklis Schortsanitis, started on Wednesday for Olympiacos but only played 13 minutes and scored six points.
Coming off the bench, Croatia center Nikola Vujcic finished with six points, five rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot and Serbia's Milos Teodosic impressed with 12 points, four assists and two steals in less than 13 minutes.
For Lietuvos Rytas, who dropped to 2-1, Lithuania national team playmaker Arturas Jomantas scored 15 points with Teodosic's Serbia teammate Bojan Popovic contributing nine points but turning the ball over seven times.
Fenerbahce edge Cibona
A pair of Turkey's young centers, Omer Onan and Oguz Savas, played well for Fenerbahce (2-1) in their 67-62 victory over Cibona (0-3).
Savaz had 14 points and 10 boards while Onan scored 11 points.
Another Turkey pivot, Semih Erden, had six rebounds but scored just two points.
Croatia national team players Marin Rozic and Marko Tomas scored 10 and three points, respectively, in defeat.
A Lithuanian led BC Khimki (2-1) to a 77-72 home triumph over Ewe Baskets Oldenburg (1-2).
Paulius Jankunas had 23 points for the winning side.
Lottomatica Roma won for the third game in a row, 83-71, at Maroussi BC (1-2) and Montepaschi Siena (3-0) rolled to an 82-65 triumph at Asvel Basket (0-3).
However, Italy's other team in action on Wednesday, Armani Jeans Milano (1-2), slumped to an 88-83 defeat at Asseco Prokom (1-2).
