VENICE (EuroLeague Women) - EuroLeague Women newcomers Umana Reyer Venezia won for the fifth consecutive time to start the season on Wednesday night by edging CSKA Moscow 66-63.
Vanessa Hayden-Johnson had 19 points and 13 rebounds and Giorgia Sottana scored 14 for Italians Umana Reyer while Katie Douglas led CSKA with 23.
There were two critical moments in the fourth quarter.
Douglas drilled a jumper to close the gap to 56-55 with 5:05 remaining, but after a timeout, Italy international Simona Ballardini buried a three-pointer for the home side.
Umana Reyer went back in front by eight, only for CSKA to battle and again close the gap to 65-63 with 45 seconds remaining after an Ann Wauters (18 pts, 12 rbs) three-pointer.
Daliborka Jokic missed a shot for the hosts with 16 seconds left in the game, and the ball went back over to CSKA.
But with six seconds to go, Janel McCarville was off target with a jumper and Venezia rebounded.
CSKA had to commit four fouls before Umana Reyer went to the line and when they did, Jokic made one of two for the 66-63 win.
CSKA, who parted with long-time Russia international Maria Stepanova last week, are now 3-2.
Massimo Riga, the Umana Reyer coach, couldn't hide his delight after the victory against the Russian giants and former EuroLeague Women champions.
"This was an historic day for Reyer and Italian basketball overall," he said.
Team USA center Sylvia Fowles erupted for 25 points and also pulled down 17 rebounds to help fire two-time defending champions Spartak Moscow Region to a 93-70 win at Lattes Montpellier.
Spartak never trailed in the EuroLeague Women Group D contest as they improved to 4-1 while dropping Montpellier to 0-5.
Fenerbahce clinched their third success of the EuroLeague Women season with a late 73-68 Group D victory at Beretta Famila in Schio, Italy.
Turkey international Esmeral Tuncluer led Fener in their road triumph with 20 points.
ESB Lille Metropole finally broke into the win column on Wednesday night in the EuroLeague Women and they did so in convincing fashion against Latvian strugglers TTT Riga.

Ros Casares claimed an important win in Croatia on Wednesday with an 83-72 victory over Jolly JBS Sibenik.
The visitors took command in the first half, going in front by as many as 19 points before taking a 37-20 lead to the break.
