MADRID (EuroBasket Women/FIBA World Championship for Women) - Spain have named their preliminary squad of 15 players for the EuroBasket Women in France.
Silvia Dominguez missed last summer's Qualification Round while trying to make Seattle's WNBA roster but is back in the team after a terrific season with UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia.
The point guard captured the EuroLeague Women title for the third consecutive time, following up championship triumphs in the competition the previous two years with Perfumerias Avenida and Ros Casares.
Leonor Rodriguez blossomed into Florida State University's top player this season in American college basketball and played in the women's NCAA Tournament.
Having only just signed to play for Perfumerias Avenida next season, Rodriguez has been rewarded with a spot in the preliminary squad.
Among the players in Spain's bronze-medal winning side at the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women in the Czech Republic to be named among the 15 are veterans Amaya Valdemoro, Elisa Aguilar, Laia Palau, Cindy Lima, Anna Cruz, Alba Torrens, Sancho Lyttle, Laura Nicholls and Luci Pascua.
In addition to Rodriguez, emerging players in the preliminary squad are Marta Xargay, who played for Spain's women the past two summers, Cristina Ouvina, Queralt Casas and Laura Gil.
Spain will launch their preparations 14 May in Aguilas, Murcia.
Torrens, who missed last year's qualifying campaign while recovering from a serious knee injury, and Lyttle won't be able to link up with the side at the beginning of training because of their commitments with Galatasaray in Turkey.
They are currently in the play-offs.
"When the Turkish Finals end, we'll be able to sit with them and plan their time of rest before they join," Spain coach Lucas Mondelo said.
Spain finished second to Sweden their qualifying group last summer and will again go up against the Scandinavians in EuroBasket Women Group B.
Defending European champions Russia, coming off a fourth-place finish at the Olympics, and Italy are also in the Group B.
The EuroBasket Women is a qualifying tournament for the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey.
