21/01/2008Rising Star: Elias Harris

[by Thomas Käckenmeister] - It was the icing on the cake at this year's All star game of the German youngsters: Elias Harris flew in for a two-handed-jam at the buzzer to seal the 65:47-victory for Team South.

Harris has been the outstanding player of the game. He dunked four times and finished with 15 points (7/8 from the field), four rebounds, one assist and one block. Together with teammate Christian Standhardinger (19 points, 7 rebounds) the selection of the best young guns from the south never trailed but the opening minutes of the game. When the northern squad cut the lead to four points (42:46), the south, led by Harris and Standhardinger, cruised to an easy victory.

In the end, Harris was voted the Most Valuable Player of the Game. This award has been given to him already one year ago, when the best players of the NBBL played the U20-national team. Back then, Harris scored 13 points and nine rebounds.

The game of Elias Harris, a versatile swingman born on July 6th 1989, is one of the best young players Germany has to offer at the moment. Alongside with Tim Ohlbrecht, a promising center who plays for Bamberg, Harris may have little problems in the future to compete at the highest level. Even German national team coach Dirk Bauermann, who awarded the MVP-trophy after Saturday's game, sees a lot of talent in Harris: "He is definitely one of the greatest talents in Germany right now."

Playing for BIS Speyer in the German second division ProB, Harris is third in scoring with 22,2 points per game. His explosive style of play electrifies the fans more and more. But it will last one for one more season. After finishing his highschool, Harris wants to go abroad to play college basketball in the USA. Will he become the heir of Dirk Nowitzki in the NBA one day?
