Overview
The last three years has seen an unprecedented growth in both the quality and awareness of international basketball featuring national teams competing at the Continental and World level.
Basketball was once again one of the most viewed and most popular sports at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Tens of thousands of fans in the arena and hundreds of millions on television and the internet witnessed a very high level of play from both the men and the women. The USA men’s team was full of the very best NBA players and they regained the Gold Medal in an epic Olympic Final, one of the best ever games of basketball, against the current FIBA World Champions Spain. In the women, Australia and the USA once again showed that they are the top two teams in the world and the USA retained their Olympic Gold Medal with a dominant display over the very spirited efforts of the current FIBA World Champions.
Eight hundred million people watched the 2006 FIBA World Championship live together with a further 5.3 billion who followed the action through sports round-ups and news features.
The world of basketball has never been more competitive and the future FIBA World and Continental Championships will showcase the very best of international basketball featuring the stars of the sport.
