Overview
2006 saw the most exciting, competitive and widely followed FIBA World Championship ever, culminating in Spain being crowned World Champions, after Greece has knocked out the favourites USA in the Semi-Final. The players, fans and media called it the "best ever" Championship with records were broken in all areas including over 3,000 accredited media, sell-out arenas, 6 billion TV viewers, 375 million web-site hits, all marketing rights sold out, and for the first time ever an extensive licensing and merchandising programme.
2007 will see the staging of the five Continental Championships for Men and Women which will also serve as the direct qualifications for the Beijing Olympics and for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying events in 2008. Highlights will be the current World Champions Spain hosting the 2007 FIBA Eurobasket, the Americas Championship taking place in Las Vegas and other FIBA Championships in Italy, Japan, Korea, Chile, Russia, Angola, Senegal, Serbia, Slovakia and Australia.

Basketball is the world's second most popular team sport, with 450 million players worldwide and fans in the USA and China rating it as their favourite sport. Basketball fans are young, educated with higher than average incomes and the sport enjoys a very positive image with admired icons in many countries of the world.

From its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the FIBA Commercial department manages the TV, video content, marketing and licensing and merchandising rights of all the major World and Continental Championships for Men, Women and Youth.

Our Mission is to provide a consistently high standard of Championships which are seen by the widest audience possible, and to generate the funds to develop basketball internationally.

The changing landscape of the media and marketing markets means that content and marketing increasingly overlap and therefore the Commercial team works closely together to respond to these opportunities and challenges. However we retain 3 broad areas of operations:
  • Events
  • TV and video content
  • Marketing partnership
