UKR - Pecherov searches for playing time in Paris

PARIS (Pro A) - Ukrainian youngster Olexsiy Pecherov has penned a deal with Paris Basket Racing for the remainder of the season.

The 2.10m center, who was in his country's squad at EuroBasket 2005, has left Ukraine in search of playing time.

The 19-year-old appeared in just two games last season in the FIBA Europe League as BC Kyiv reached the final of that competition.

Pecherov had hoped to spend more time on court this season for the Ukrainian champions but BC Kyiv signed veteran center Ratko Varda, one of the best at the position in Europe.

Pecherov has decided to try his luck elsewhere.

"I gave Olexiy the right to choose," said BC Kyiv coach Renato Pasquali. "Whether to stay in Kyiv or go abroad.

"However, I stressed he won't have enough time on court to progress."

BC Kyiv do still own Pecherov's contract and next year he will return to Ukraine.

"There is a good possibility I will play for 20 to 25 minutes," Pecherov said. "Therefore, it will be a good chance to progress."

Pecherov travelled to France on Sunday after being granted a visa.

Ukraine did not play well at the EuroBasket, but Pecherov's numbers were good.

In 15 minutes per game, he averaged six points and four rebounds.

Clubs in Serbia & Montenegro, Israel and Poland were also interested in signing Pecherov.

"I've chosen Paris Basket," he said, "because the French championship is one of the best in Europe."
