Turkey outlast Brazil in double OT for third win in a row

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - Turkey edged out Brazil, 79-76, after double overtime to conclude their Group A campaign with a third consecutive win.

The hosts led by as many as 18 points in the first half but could not hold off the Turks and missed out on ending their participation in the competition on a winning note. They bow out with an 0-5 mark. The game was the last one for stalwarts Erika Souza and Adriana Pinto who are retiring from the national team.

A 16-0 run in the second quarter saw the hosts go up 31-13 and they headed into the locker room at the break up 36-20.

Turkey began their comeback in the third quarter and, when Isil Alben stole an inbound pass, turned it into a lay-up and hit a free-throw to convert a three-point play, they were within 47-41 heading into the final frame.

The momentum had now clearly shifted in the Turks' favour. A 9-0 run saw them turn the tables on Brazil to go up 57-48 with 3:44 left in regulation. Brazil answered through Souza who scored the last six points of the period to tie it at 60 and send it to overtime.

Iziane Castro hit a pair of free-throws in the final minute of the first extra session to put Brazil ahead 70-65. However Turkey scored the last five points to send it to a second overtime. Alben stole the ball from Castro with 1:25 to go to put Turkey up 77-74 and after Castro hit a pair of free-throws, Sanders safeguarded the win from the charity stripe.

Turning Point: Alben had 8 steals in the game, tying the mark for the second most in a single game in the history of the competition. None was more important than her 7th as it came when, with 40 seconds left in the first overtime, when she picked the pocket of Joice Rodrigues and scored a lay-up to tie the game at 70 and ultimately send it to the second overtime.

Stats Don't Lie: Turkey got away with the win despite very mediocre shooting displays from the field (29-of-77 for 38 percent) and at the free-throw line (12-of-23 for 52 percent).

Hero: Alben, who is battling a hamstring injury, did just about everything that Turkey needed of her and it reflected in the boxscore as she finished with 18 points, 9 rebounds, the aforementioned 8 steals and 5 rebounds. The only black mark was her 2-of-7 performance at the free-throw line.

The Bottom Line: Turkey now wait to find out the outcome of the Japan-France game which will determine the order in which the three teams fill out second, third and fourth places in Group A.
