Spain no match for USA as reigning Olympic champions move to 2-0

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - The USA took a comfortable 103-63 win over Spain on Monday to improve to 2-0 in the Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament at the Deodoro Youth Arena.

Turning Point: After Alba Torrens hit a pair of free-throws to get Spain within 19-14 with 2:59 left in the first quarter, the Americans scored the last 10 points of that period for a commanding 29-14 lead. They then proceeded to build their margin of victory for the remainder of the contest.

Stats Don't Lie: Spain were 7-of-14 (50 percent) from three-point range and made 10 of 13 (77 percent) free-throw attempts but shot a dismal 16-of-51 (31 percent) from two-point range.

Game Hero: Once again, the USA gave a demonstration in playing unselfish and smart basketball, resulting in 11 of 12 players getting in the scoring column. Diana Taurasi had 13 points, Elena Delle Donne and Sylvia Fowles added a dozen each.

The Bottom Line: On the back of their win over EuroBasket Women 2015 winners Serbia, knew what to expect in facing the reigning World and Olympic champions. As such, they took the precaution of resting Marta Xargay - who suffered a slight knock to her foot on Sunday - and rested their key players once the outcome of this game was beyond doubt. The Spaniards are back in action against China on Tuesday, with the USA facing Serbia in the next game.
