Dabovic looking to cherish Rio Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - As Serbia prepare to open their Rio Olympics Group B campaign against Spain on Sunday, Ana Dabovic shed some light on the team that surprised a few by winning a first-ever major title at EuroBasket Women 2015.

The 26-year-old shooting guard, who plays with a smile, talked to FIBA.com about taking part in a celebration of sport and revealed her goal in the Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament.

FIBA.com: Serbia have made huge progress in recent years, culminating in the title at EuroBasket Women last summer. What does it feel like to be competing in the Olympics?
Dabovic: This is the highest level an athlete can be at. I am enjoying every day… being surrounded by the best athletes in the world... I am really happy to be next to athletes like Novak Djokovic and Jelena Jankovic (both tennis) who represent our country in one of biggest sporting events. They are our idols, I am happy to be with them.

Ana Dabovic was named EuroBasket Women 2015 MVP

FIBA.com: I guess that some people still have reservations about your national team even though you are the European champions. How do you describe your team?
Dabovic: People can expect from the Serbia national team what we expect from ourselves, which is fighting and try to represent our country the best way we can. So far, I think we did a good job. We have the same coaching staff and players from the past five years. We are a team that never gives up. We fight from start to finish. That’s what we are as a team. Individual talents don’t really matter if you can’t play as a unity.

FIBA.com: Let's talk about Group B. You open your Group Phase campaign against Spain, Senegal, Canada, the USA and China. What's your assessment of those teams?
Dabovic: It's a tough group. There is no such a thing as easy teams in the Olympics because these are the 12 best teams in the world. We know that it will be really, really hard for us to advance to the Quarter-Finals, which is our first goal. It’s a reasonable objective considering that this is our first Olympic Games, but we are going step by step.

FIBA.com: Serbia have played Spain before.
Dabovic: It’ll be a tough game, but not impossible to win. We'll try to surprise.

FIBA.com: You were the MVP at EuroBasket Women last summer. Then you joined the WNBA Los Angeles Sparks. Now, you are about to become an Olympian. Is this the highest moment of your playing career?
Dabovic: I just try to play the best I can. My teammates know that if I am in a good position and I can help. I have really good teammates and I hope to keep working and help whichever team I play for. It's a great feeling to compete against the best players.
