Yi shines as China win Sino-European event

KUNSHAN (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - China have the wind in their sails after beating Montenegro, Germany and a France A squad to capture the 2016 Sino-European Men's Basketball Championship.

The Chinese, warming up for the Rio de Janeiro Games, got 15 points from Yi Jianlian and 13 points and 11 boards from Zhou Qi in a 65-49 win over Montenegro on Friday.

The Far East giants followed that victory up with a 71-67 triumph over Germany on Saturday, a game that saw Yi poured in 17 points. Li Gen and Dingyan Yuhang contributed 16 and 10 points, respectively, in that success.

China then clinched first place with a 78-73 victory over the French on Sunday with Yi exploding for a game-high 31 points.

Yi's performances will have come as no surprise as he was the Most Valuable Player of last year's FIBA Asia Championship in Changsha-Hunan.

By playing in Rio, Yi will compete at an Olympic Games for the fourth time in his career.

China, meanwhile, have a couple of important dates coming up against their first opponents at the Olympics, the United States.

They will take on the Americans at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on 24 July and again two days later at Oracle Arena in Oakland.

USA and China will square off in Group A at the Rio Games on 6 August.
