Varejao champing at the bit to play Olympics at home

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - Sportsmen dream of getting the opportunity to play on the big stage in front of home crowds in international events.

Nothing is more meaningful for an athlete than to compete at an Olympics in front of his compatriots.

With that in mind, Anderson Varejao is in a state of elation because in just 24 days, he'll run onto the court in the Carioca Arena in Rio de Janeiro with Brazil to face Lithuania in his team's game.

It will be one of the greatest experiences of his life.

Brazil, as the host nation, will be roared on by the fans. They will attempt to make the most of the home-court advantage by reaching the podium.

"It is a unique moment for all of us in our careers," said Anderson, who made his Olympic bow four years ago in London, where Brazil finished fifth.

The 33-year-old power forward/center played in his first tournament with the senior team at the 2002 FIBA Basketball World Cup. He was also in the line-up two years ago at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.

"This time, we can play a home Olympics and it's something that many here never imagined that could happen one day, to represent our country in the Olympics before our Brazilian people, family, friends. To represent the national team in the Olympics will be something that we will take with us for the rest of our lives."

There is plenty to be excited about when it comes to watching Brazil. One player that is sure to have an impact is Raulzinho, who made his first senior team appearance at the 2010 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Having made the team at the 2012 Olympics, his most influential run with Brazil came two years ago at the World Cup in Spain.

Brazil will play in Group B and in addition to Lithuania, they will face Argentina, Croatia, Nigeria and Spain.
