If Spain beat Argentina, another classic with France awaits

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - One of the ramifications of Nigeria's defeat to Brazil was that Spain know they will finish second with a victory over Argentina and that means another showdown with their European rivals France.

Les Bleus finished third in Group A and will therefore cross over to meet the second-place team in Group A.

Spain and France have played some real humdingers the past several years with incredibly high stakes.

Most fresh in the mind are the clashes the last couple of summers. At the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Madrid, France stunned Spain in the Quarter-Finals.

Spain got revenge when they beat France in overtime in last year's EuroBasket Semi-Finals. The win qualified Pau Gasol and Co for the Rio de Janeiro Games.

In 2009, Spain beat an unbeaten France in the EuroBasket Quarter-Finals before romping to the title.

France beat Spain in the Preliminary Round of the 2010 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Turkey, while the Spaniards swept France at EuroBasket 2011 in Lithuania, including the Final.

At the 2012 Olympics, Spain ground out a Quarter-Final triumph over France and the following year, the French needed overtime but defeated Spain in the Semi-Finals after overtime. Vincent Collet's side then captured the title.

So yes, these two fierce rivals will trade blows once again if Spain overcome Argentina, and that's going to be no easy feat!
