Goulding leads Boomers to fourth win in a row as Mills gets night off

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - Australia will go into the Olympic Basketball Tournament's Quarter-Finals on the back of their fourth victory in Rio de Janeiro after beating Venezuela, 81-56.

With Andrew Bogut back after resting against China and providing a towering presence inside, the Boomers got on top of last year's FIBA Americas Championship winners early and led until the end.

Andrej Lemanis gave Pat Mills the night off but got a big lift from Chris Goulding, who came into the game averaging less than a point per contest and poured in a game-high 22.

Turning Point: Australia were ready to play from the off, streaking out to a 16-2 lead. Venezuela clawed their way back with an 8-0 run and closed the gap to 23-19 but got no closer. With the Boomers on top 25-11, Goulding made a pair of free-throws. Shortly thereafter, he connected from behind the arc for a 32-23 lead.

Stats Don't Lie: With all of their big men available, Australia bossed the boards and finished with 45 rebounds to just 25 for the Vinotinto.

Hero: Goulding, best known for his offense, was ready to slot in when Lemanis decided to sit Mills and he buried 4-of-7 shots from long range and 6-of-10 overall as part of a game-high 22-point performance.

Bottom Line: Australia were prohibitive favorites in this game so the final result came as no surprise. Now they can rest, recuperate and wait to see who their Quarter-Final opponents are going to be. For Venezuela, who beat China and played hard in their other games, it was another opportunity to play top competition and that should benefit them in the long run.
