Andersen hails 'great character, chemistry' in Australia team

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - Everyone expected Australia to be good at these Olympics and they have shown why with some terrific performances.

With two wins in their first three games, a hugely talented and experienced roster has revealed itself to have no obvious weaknesses. That was even true in the battle against the two-time defending champions United States, a showdown that was close until the final minutes.

David Andersen, their 36-year-old big man, has played very well in Rio. He spoke to FIBA.com.

FIBA.com: This has really been a terrific competition hasn't it?
Andersen: It's the best of the best. It's the Olympics. Everyone lives to be a part of it. It's one of those things, you come out, you have your strategies, you play your game. Guys step up. Other guys' roles may not be that big, it's one of those things. You just hope for the best.

David Andersen (AUS) has been excellent for the Boomers

FIBA.com: How does this Boomers team compare to the others that you have played for?
Andersen: I don't like to compare too much because every team is unique but definitely, we have a great character, a great chemistry. That's something that's been in most Aussie teams that I've been in. This time around, we've got a bit more swag, more NBA guys. We've been together (for a long time) so there is a great core. We're building something, hopefully something special. We're definitely on the right path. Now it's just a matter of plodding through the tough games.

FIBA.com: Your first performance in the win over France was impressive but the team really seemed to click into gear when you beat Serbia in the second game.
Andersen: It was a good fight. Serbia are one of the best basketball nations in the world. That was a war. It was great to come away with a victory.

FIBA.com: When you look at point guard Matthew Dellavedova, who is leading the Olympics in assists with 11.3 per game, and see the tremendous overall progress that he has made, what should that tell us?
Andersen: Delly is a great player. He's been a part of the program since London, or even before that. Great guy, he works hard every day. He's someone like me in that we're gym rats. If he's sitting down watching TV, he's stretching, doing something to keep his body right so when he does great, I really like that because you tip your hat to the guys that work the hardest.

Matthew Dellavedova (AUS) is at his second straight Olympics

FIBA.com: We know the Boomers had high expectations coming into this tournament. In fact, they couldn't be any higher.
Andersen: We set the bar high. We said we want a medal, a gold medal. We said that from the get-go and we're sticking to that. We want to play hard.
