World Cup stars scoop All-NBA First Team honors

NEW YORK (NBA) - Five players that have enjoyed championship-winning moments with their national sides in international basketball have been named to the All-NBA First Team, including league MVP Stephen Curry of the United States.

Curry (Golden State Warriors), James Harden (Houston Rockets) and Anthony Davis (New Orleans Pelicans), all members of the title-winning USA side at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, are first-team selections along with Spain's Marc Gasol (Memphis Grizzlies) and LeBron James (Cleveland Cavaliers), a two-time Olympic gold medalist with the Americans.

Since returning from Spain, where he started in all of the national side's games and averaged 10.7 points per contest while shooting 43.8 percent (21 of 48) from three-point range, Curry has taken his play to new heights with the Warriors.

He led Golden State to the best record in the Western Conference while averaging 23.8 points, 7.7apg and 2.04 steals and shooting a league-best 91.4 percent at the free-throw line.

Curry had 33 points on Thursday night to help the Warriors edge Harden's Houston Rockets, 99-98, and take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference Finals.

Harden was on the losing end, despite pouring in 38 points.

The outstanding play of Davis was pivotal as he and his Pelicans teammates reached the Western Conference playoffs for the first time while James has been at his inspirational best with the Cavaliers, leading them into the Eastern Conference Finals.

The USA could end up benefitting from the presence of all four of their All-NBA First Team players when they play at the Rio de Janeiro Games next season.

The Americans qualified for the Olympics by winning the World Cup in Madrid.

The latest honors have reconfirmed that no national side is as deep and talented as the United States, a team that has not lost a game since its 2006 FIBA Basketball World Cup Semi-Final setback to Greece in Japan.

Gasol, who two seasons ago was named as the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year, saw his career take a major turn for the best in 2006 when he made the Spain team and helped them capture the world title.

After a disappointing Quarter-Final at last year's World Cup, he rebounded by leading the Memphis Grizzlies into the Western Conference Semi-Finals.

DeMarcus Cousins (Sacramento Kings) and Pau Gasol (Chicago) were two World Cup players for the USA and Spain, respectively, that have made the All-NBA Second Team, along with USA's Chris Paul (Los Angeles Clippers) and Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder) and LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland Trail Blazers).

The Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) will be hoping that both Gasols are in action this summer when the national team plays at EuroBasket 2015 and attempts to qualify for the 2016 Olympics.

All-NBA Third Team selections include World Cup MVP Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers) and Klay Thompson (Golden State) of the USA, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan (both Clippers) and Tim Duncan (San Antonio).
