Weisner gets a shot with Canada

TORONTO (2015 FIBA Americas Women's Championship) - Jamie Weisner raised plenty of eyebrows as a member of Canada's team at the 2013 FIBA U19 Women's World Championship.

She has also had three outstanding seasons at Oregon State in American college basketball.

Now the 20-year-old is going to have a chance to press her claim for a spot in the senior national side after being included on the 12-strong Canada roster that is about to tour Europe.

Weisner put in some dazzling performances for the Canadians at the U19 event in Lithuania two years ago, with the 1.75m shooting guard drilling 53.6 percent (15 of 28) of her shots from long range and averaging 17 points per game.

Canada reached the Quarter-Finals and ended up finishing seventh.

She is now aiming for a spot in the Canada team that will host the Pan American Games in Toronto from 16-20 July and the FIBA Americas Women's Championship from 9-16 August in Edmonton.

Weisner has her work cut out to earn a spot on the final roster because competition is stiff.

Some players are unable to join the European tour due to injuries, club duties or academic commitments.

She is thrilled to be in the mix.

This is an exciting time for this group. - Thomaidis

"The talent level is very high and we are ready to test ourselves against some strong teams during this European tour," Canada coach Lisa Thomaidis said.

Canada's first stop in Europe will be in Logrono, Spain, where they will square off against Poland, Great Britain and hosts Spain over a three-day span (28-30 May).

All three European opponents are warming up for EuroBasket Women 2015.

Next, Canada will travel to France and play in the cities of Arras, Orchies and Villeneuve d'Asq.

Their opponents in France will be Poland, Italy and Les Bleues.
