Tall Ferns sign off in Chinese Taipei with a win

TAPEI CITY (2015 FIBA Oceania Women's Championship) - New Zealand's Tall Ferns endured four losses at the William Jones Cup in Chinese Taipei this week but they signed off from the tournament with a confidence-boosting win.

Taking on an American select side, the Kiwis rolled to a 79-54 triumph after getting double-doubles in points and rebounds from Lisa Wallbutton and Kalani Purcell.

Wallbutton had 12 points and 13 boards while Purcell finished with 16 points and 12 boards.

Micaela Cocks (11 points) and the American college basketball-playing teenage trio of Penina Davidson (10 points and 8 rebounds), Tessa Boagni (9 points) and Stella Beck (7 points) all had significant contributions.

We have improved every game as a team and you can see the belief starting to grow within the group and individual players. - Kereama

"We believe if we can play our 'Tall Ferns' style of play and execute it consistently for a whole game, we can beat anybody," Kereama said.

The New Zealanders are going to be the underdogs in the FIBA Oceania Women's Championship against Australia, with the first game being played in Melbourne on 15 August and the second contest in Tauranga a couple of days later.

The winner will clinch a spot in the Rio de Janeiro Games while the loser will play at the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament (WOQT).

"We kept them to 54 points and that is what we are going to have to do if we want to beat Australia," Kereama said.

"Our defense will be a very important piece of our puzzle.

"All the schemes and change ups we have are slowly becoming second nature.

"However, we still need playing time together so our next [friendly] series against Japan will be important in order to become consistent in our structures."

The Tall Ferns depart Taipei City on Saturday and arrive back in Auckland the following day.

Japan and New Zealand face each other in Christchurch on Wednesday and Friday before meeting for a third time in Ashburton two days later.
