Svitek trims Hungary squad to 17 for EuroBasket Women

BUDAPEST (EuroBasket Women 2015) - Hungary's national team is getting down to the nitty-gritty before serving as co-hosts of EuroBasket Women 2015.

Wisla Can-Pack Krakow coach Stefan Svitek, who in February agreed to return to the helm of the Hungarians for a second stint in charge, has cut seven names from his initial 24-player preliminary squad.

There will be no place for Bernadett Horvath, Virag Kiss, Dora Nagy, Nora Rujak, Nikolett Sarok, Orsolya Szecsi or Zsofia Varga.

A handful of players who were with Hungary when they last took part at a EuroBasket Women, six years ago, are among the 17 that will show up for training on 4 May in Miskolcon.

Zsofia Fegyverneky, Katalin Honti, Dora Horti, Anna Vajda and Tijana Krivacevic all featured for Hungary when they competed in Latvia in 2009.

Krivacevic was also a member of the UE Sopron side that recently won the Hungarian domestic title.

One of her UE Sopron teammates, 1.81m shooting guard Zsofia Simon, is also in the 17.

Simon averaged almost 18 minutes per game in Hungary's unsuccessful EuroBasket Women 2013 campaign.

Rita Rasheed and Timea Czank, who were in the Miskolc team that lost 3-1 to UE Sopron in the domestic finals, also remain in the Hungary squad.

Svitek and naturalised Hungarian sharpshooter Allie Quigley, meanwhile, are unable to shift their focus to the national team because both are involved in the Polish domestic league finals with Wisla Can-Pack Krakow.
Wisla, are knotted 1-1 in the best-of-five finals series with Artego Bydgoszcz, a series that has a potential Game 5 on 28 April - almost a week before the start date of the Hungarian preparations.

EuroBasket Women tips off on 11 June and basketball will be front and centre in Hungary, the way it was in 1997 when they last staged the event.

Hungary will compete in Group D, in Sopron, against Sweden, Lithuania, Spain and the Slovak Republic.

Hungary 17-player squad for EuroBasket Women 2015: Reka Balint, Timea Czank, Zsofia Fegyverneky, Bernadett Hatar, Katalin Honti, Dora Horti, Tijana Krivacevic, Anna Lakloth, Alexandria Quigley, Krisztina Raksanyi, Rita Rasheed, Zsofia Simon, Fanni Szabo, Amadea Szamosi, Anna Vajda, Dorina Zele, Orsolya Zsovar.
