Rio de Janeiro to host DIRECTV Liga de las Americas FIBA Final Four

SAN JUAN (DIRECTV Liga de las Americas) - FIBA Americas on Wednesday announced that the Final Four of the 2015 DIRECTV Liga de las Americas FIBA will take place in Rio de Janeiro's Ginasio do Maracanazinho on Saturday-Sunday 14-15 March.

Penarol (Argentina), Bauru (Brazil), Pioneros of Quintana Roo (Mexico) along with hosts and current title holders Flamengo (Brazil) will be the four teams doing battle for the title of 2015 FIBA Americas League champions.

"First of all we have to thank Penarol and Bauru for making the official requests during the bidding process, without precedent in the history of this competition," Said Alberto Garcia, Regional Director of FIBA Americas. "Having had the interest of three of the four participating clubs to organise the Final Four speaks to the level and the product that this league has become."

The DIRECTV Liga de las Americas, the region's leading continental club competition, is in its eighth edition. This season's competition tipped off on 16 January in Sao Jose dos Campos (Brazil) with first phase action also taking place in the host cities of Cancun (Mexico), Corrientes (Argentina) and Tunja (Colombia).

The Semi-Finals, staged in Cancun and Mar del Plata (Argentina), determined the teams that will compete in the Final Four.

On Saturday 14 March, Bauru will face Penarol while Flamengo take on Pioneros. On Sunday 15 March, the losers of the two Semi-Finals will play in the Third-Place Game, before the two winners square off for the DIRECTV Liga de las Americas FIBA title.

The Ginasio do Maracanazinho will host the Final Four, after having done so last year. It was also the venue where FIBA Americas League winners Flamengo defeated Turkish Airlines Euroleague winners Maccabi Tel-Aviv to claim the 2014 Intercontinental Cup.

"We are happy to return to the place that gave us the best Final Four in the league history last year," said Garcia. "We have no doubt that this year, with three past champions - Penarol, Pioneros and the host, Flamengo - along with a great team like Bauru, this will be even better."

"It is a great joy for all of us in the FIBA family, to offer a spectacle of this magnitude on the 14 and 15 of March."
