Quartet into knockout stage, Greece pick up big win at U18 European Championship

VOLOS (2015 U18 European Championship) - Reigning champions Turkey, France, Germany and Lithuania all booked their tickets to the Quarter-Finals of the 2015 U18 European Championship by remaining undefeated in Volos while hosts Greece picked up a crucial victory on the first day of Second Round action.

Turkey raced past Bosnia and Herzegovina 80-47 as Omer Yurtseven led the way with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Furkan Korkmaz scored 14 points. The Turks are atop Group F with a 3-0 record while the Bosnians fell to 1-2 in the group.

Standing even in Group F with Turkey are Lithuania, who used an 18-0 third quarter run to beat Russia 73-65. Martynas Varnas led the way for the Lithuanians with 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and one steal. Russia are winless in the group at 0-3.

Hosts Greece bounced back from their disappointing loss to close the First Round by knocking off Italy 63-52 to move to 1-2 in Group F. Dionysis Skoulidas tallied 17 points and Georgios Papagiannis collected a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Greeks.

The Italians have the same 1-2 mark.

Group E also has two teams already into the Final Eight in France and Germany.

The French powered past Latvia 91-62 as Stephane Gombauld and Luc Loubaki led four players in double figures with 16 points each. Latvia are still in search for their first win in the group.

Germany booked their first top-eight finish since 1996 with a 74-47 win over Czech Republic as Richard Freudenberg had 13 points while Kostja Mushidi scored 12 points.

Just like Latvia, the Czechs are also without a win in the Second Round.

Spain improved to 2-1 in Group E after a 74-62 triumph over Serbia with Ramon Vila collecting 16 points and Santiago Yusta adding 15 points.

The Serbs dropped to 1-2.

Croatia and Finland meanwhile opened the Classification Round Group G with victories.

Bruno Skokna poured in 30 points as Croatia beat Ukraine 95-87. Edon Maxhuni paced Finland with 21 points while Lauri Markkanen added 18 points in a 70-68 victory over Montenegro.
