Puerto Rico show Olmos the door

SAN JUAN (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Paco Olmos has been relieved of his duties as the coach of Puerto Rico's national team, a consequence of the Boricuas' poor showing at the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

The Spaniard, who led the team to a runners-up finish at the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship in Caracas, Venezuela, fueled hopes of a strong run at this year's world event.

But he steered Puerto Rico to just one win in the Group Phase and they failed to advance from the opening stage for the third straight time in the tournament.

Puerto Rico's only victory came against the Philippines in their penultimate game.

Veteran coach Carlos Calcano has been handed the reins of the Boricuas for the Central American and Caribbean Games, a tournament to be held 24-28 November in Veracruz, Mexico.

Puerto Rican Basketball Federation President Carlos Beltran thanked Olmos for his work in a statement.

"We are very grateful to Paco for his professionalism and all the effort that he put into his job the past couple of years," said Beltran.

"Unfortunately, the objectives that we had set out for ourselves were not achieved and now its our duty to get back on track."

Calcano has been a part of the coaching set-up with Puerto Rico's federation in the past decade.

The players, meanwhile, are to gather and start preparing for the Central American and Caribbean Games on Monday in Guaynabo.
