Pavon, Gretter join Argentina squad

BUENOS AIRES (2015 FIBA Americas Women's Championship) - Sandra Pavon and Melissa Gretter, a couple of foreign-based players that will be important for Argentina at this summer's women's basketball tournaments in Canada, will be in Buenos Aires on Monday when the national squad gathers at CENARD.

Coach Cristian Santander will have a one-week training camp as part of the preparations for the Pan American Games in Toronto (16-20 July) and the FIBA Americas Women's Championship in Edmonton (9-16 August).

Pavon, 29, has been playing in Brazil's top flight with the Venceslau club while Gretter has been competing in Spain's Liga Femenina with Mann Filter Zaragoza.

Seventeen players in all have been called for the camp that runs from Monday 20-Friday 25 April.

Pavon, a 1.79m guard, has played for Argentina's senior team since the 2003 FIBA Americas Championship for Women.

Gretter, a 1.60m point guard, broke into the senior team at the 2011 FIBA Americas Women's Championship.

She averaged 6.5 points, 6.2 assists and 2.8 rebounds for Argentina at the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship.

Both players featured in the Argentina team that fell 59-47 to Brazil in a tough 2014 South American Women's Championship Final. Gretter had 16 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Natasha Spietta, who celebrates her 23rd birthday on Friday (17 April), has also been called up after having a baby.

A member of Argentina's squad at the 2011 FIBA U19 Women's Championship, Spiatta is thrilled to be involved.

"After becoming a mother, I took some time off to look after my children," she said.

"But when I starting training again, I set myself short-term and long-term aims.

"One of those is the national team."

It's a reward for my family, too, because of the sacrifices made to allow my dreams to take place. - Spiatta

As for the tournaments in Canada, Spiatta said: "The aims are different with respect to the Pan American Games and the FIBA Americas [Women's] Championship.

"The aim at the Pan American Games is to improve on the fifth position [in 2011] while the FIBA Americas Women's Championship, the qualification [for the Olympics]."
