Oberto moves into the high post for CABB

BUENOS AIRES (CABB) - Fabricio Oberto was for many years a hard-working, skillful center of Argentina's national team.

A member of the golden generation, the one that finished top of the podium at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Oberto had great success as a player in Spain and also had a long spell in the NBA.

Now the Argentina Basketball Confederation (CABB), which is the midst of a shake-up, has added the 39-year-old to their team.

He is to work in external relations.

The comptroller of the CABB, Federico Susbielles, gave a hearty welcome to Oberto.

Oberto's former Argentina and San Antonio Spurs teammate Manu Ginobili, also expressed happiness over his involvement.

Oberto is thrilled to be involved with a confederation and national team that helped him throughout his career.

He is to effectively become the face of the CABB outside of Argentina.

Oberto has been flooded with messages of warm wishes and he wanted to thank everyone, as well as make it very clear that he is without a doubt very happy to be added to the team.

"I come to collaborate and to join a group that slowly is consolidating," he said.

"I’ll try to give all I can from my experience. I believe this is a time to have everyone on the same side - officials, players, coaches and referees - to work together to create the future that Argentinian basketball deserves.

"I think the CABB is going down the right path. We ask for transparency and professionalism and at that point we are heading there to look forward and work seeking consensus for a new model of organization and management.

"Basically, I'll take care of establishing links with other federations... to get tournaments or tours for all the national teams, and create a network of contacts in the long term that allows us to become strong on the outside."

Oberto made his debut for Argentina's senior team at the 1996 Olympics and two years later played in the first of four FIBA Basketball World Cups.

The highlight of his national team career the 2004 Athens Games gold-medal run, when he averaged 8.7 points and four rebounds per game.
