Mixed night for record-breaking Wisla Can-Pack

KRAKOW (EuroLeague Women) - There was a strange mixture of disappointment and overpowering pride for Wisla Can-Pack on the last EuroLeague Women night of the calendar year.

The Polish club made history as they smashed the previous attendance record of 8,597 set by Good Angels Kosice last season when a staggering 12,990 supporters descended on Krakow Arena for their clash against reigning champions Galatasaray odeabank. It is the largest turnout for a women's basketball game played in Europe at any level.

However, Wisla were unable to deliver the victory which their massive crowd were craving for in crashing to a fourth straight loss, as Galatsaray odeabank finally recorded a win at the sixth time of asking with a 64-53 success.

One reason for the Istanbul giants finally getting rolling was that their all-Spanish backcourt of Nuria Martinez and Queralt Casas emerged from their respective shooting slumps and combined to score 29 points.

"We are happy of course and the atmosphere in the arena was amazing," declared Casas afterwards.

The defeat was hard to stomach for Wisla and forward Justyna Zurowska-Cegielska confessed the team had felt regret about not getting a positive result for the fans.

"We made too many mistakes and were not able to play stronger defense," she said.

"We are very sorry that we lost and on behalf of the team and myself, I want to say thank you to our fans for that fantastic support."

Also in Group A, there was drama in Ekaterinburg as the last remaining unbeaten record was snapped as UMMC were pipped 78-77 in a real thriller against visiting Dynamo Kursk.

Avenging their Russian league loss on the same floor only days earlier, 24 points from Seimone Augustus and the decisive free-throw from the USA national team guard with a handful of seconds remaining, iced a nerve-tingling contest.

"It was a good game especially after the one we had on Monday," smiled Augustus.

"We came out feeling better, were able to run fast-breaks and stayed aggressive on defense, forcing turnovers.

"We never give up and we kept on fighting.

"UMMC are a great team and we did a great job throughout all 40 minutes."

It was a fifth straight win for Kursk and the rookies are tied with their domestic rivals at the top of the group with ZVVZ USK Prague chasing after they shot the ball well to claim an 80-69 win against Basket Lattes Montpellier Agglomeration.

Fenerbahce and CB Avenida remain neck and neck in Group B with both heading into the mid-season break on 6-1 record.

A 20-point and 9-rebound performance by Angel McCoughtry - combined withlots of missed free-throws by Nadezhda - helped Fenerbahce win 65-54, while a red-hot finish carried Avenida to a 59-48 home win against Tango Bourges.

Agu Spor Kulubu made it a good week for the trio of Turkish entrants by completing a 64-53 win against BK Imos Brno and Beretta Famila Schio boosted their hopes of making the play-offs by winning 79-58 at Energa Torun behind 24 points from Croatia national team forward Iva Sliskovic.
