Mexico and Venezuela stay undefeated on Day 3

MEXICO CITY (2015 FIBA Americas Championship) - Two teams kept their undefeated record on the third day of competition at the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship.

Both Venezuela and the home team Mexico were able to win important games to remain perfect in the competition. Canada and the Dominican Republic won their first game in the 2015 edition.

Dominican Republic started the day by getting past Panama by the score of 83-66.

It was a competitive effort throughout, but the older, more veteran Panamanian roster simply could not keep up with the run-and-gun Dominican offense, especially the quickness of point guard James Feldeine, who led the team with 16 points. The Dominicans improved their record to 1-2.

Canada put on a dominating performance against Cuba to bounce back from their disappointing Day 2 loss against Argentina. A blowout was on the cards right from the start with Canada leading 30-10 at the end of the first quarter, on their way to a 101-59 victory.

Andrew Wiggins and Nik Stauskas each had 15 points and 6 rebounds in the victory. Canada now have 1 win and 1 loss in the championship.

"After the game against Argentina, it was very important to continue improving. The team was much more focused and we could rotate 12 players which is critical in a four games in four days schedule," said Canada head coach Jay Triano.

"It's no secret that we like to run the floor and put pressure on the defense. That's the positive point of the team."

Venezuela were very impressive in their 74-63 win over Puerto Rico.

Versatility was key for a Venezuelan national team that had four players score in double figures, along with a breakthrough performance from debutant Javinger Vargas, who made a trifecta of key three-pointers in clutch moments.

Puerto Rico, a two-headed horse with Renaldo Balkman and Jose Juan Barea combining for 38 points - 60 percent of the team's total - had problems defending the different looks that Venezuela were able to run in their effective offensive system which saw them shoot 49 percent from the field.

"We were very strong on both sides of the floor. The team showed great concentration for the full 40 minutes against a great rival that has historically always given us problems in these tournaments," said Venezuela head coach Nestor Garcia after his team improved to 2-0.

"I feel that our collective work was the main thing. Each player found his role, everyone was prepared and we were able to pull off this great win."

Tournament hosts and defending champions Mexico closed the night with a 65-58 win over Brazil in front of 14,219 screaming fans.

Brazil battled hard, thanks to great defensive pressure and ball movement, but could not stop an inspired Mexican team, led by Gustavo Ayon who scored 27 points to go along with 13 rebounds.

With the win, the hosts improved to 2-0.

"We played great defense in all aspects. We were able to control Marquinhos and again we showed as a team that collectively we can do great things," said Mexico head coach Sergio Valdeolmillos.

The two teams that reach the Final of the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship will qualify directly to the 2016 Rio Olympics, while the teams that come in third, fourth and fifth will clinch places in the2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (OQTS).

This changes if Brazil finish among the top two. In that case, the third-place team will advance to the Rio Games. If they finish in the 3rd-5th places, then the 6th-place team will advance to the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
