Mazembe through to the African Champions Cup Quarter-Finals, Mingas sparks Libolo

TUNIS (African Champions Cup) - Evariste Shonganya is putting up big performances at the ongoing 2014 African Champions Cup (ACC) in Tunis, Tunisia.

He has come off the bench in four of ASB Mazembe's five games so far and made significant contributions.

Shonganya was in the starting line-up just once, in Thursday's 74-67 defeat to Etoile Sportive Rades - the only undefeated team in tournament in five games -, and had game-highs 28 points and 13 rebounds.

Since then, he has become the most productive sixth man in the tournament stringing together crucial performances for Mazembe, who clinched Group B's last spot on offer for Thursday's Quarter-Finals.

On Tuesday, coach Simplice Tshibangu's decision to have him come off the bench once again inspired the 22-year-old to put on a show as he registered game-highs of 23 points and nine rebounds in leading the Democratic Republic of Congo (COD) side past Nigeria's Mark Mentor Basketball Club, 69-66.

It was Mazembe's second consecutive win at the event in Tunis, after suffering three defeats in a row.

The Congolese will take on Angolan champions Recreativo do Libolo on Thursday.

Angolan international Eduardo Mingas had 18 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists as Libolo edged out Sporting Alexandria of Egypt, 63-62.

Sporting's strategy to tighten the defense on Eric Coleman and Andre Owens paid off as the pair combined for 12 points. However, Mingas was the man that Ahmed Marei's team could not stop, as Libolo finished as Group A winners.

Tunisian international Makram Ben Romdhane had game-highs of 23 points and nine rebounds but was the only Sporting player to score in double digits. The loss meant that Sporting finished second in the Group and will face Tunisian club Union Sportive Monastir (3-2) in the Quarter-Finals.

Monastir could not capitalise on a 40-37 half-time lead against Group B winners Etoile Sportive Rades, as they dropped to an 85-80 defeat.

Rades have realistic chances of advancing to the Semi-Finals as they take on BC M'Tsapere, who finished 0-4, but advanced to the next round as a result of Group A contender Malabo Kings being suspension by FIBA Africa.

ACC reigning champions Primeiro D'Agosto bounced back from an 86-82 overtime loss to Rades on Monday, to beat Abidjan Basketball Club 'ABC' 80-63.

In Thursday's highly-anticipated Quarter-Finals game, D'Agosto will face hosts Club Africain, who recorded two wins and two losses in the Group Phase.
