Liga Sudamericana clashes to be played in Argentina, Brazil

SAN JUAN (Liga Sudamericana) - Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo have been named as the host cities for the Semi-Final Round of the Liga Sudamericana.

Group E games involving Argentino de Junin, Boca Juniors, Malvin and Winner Limeira will be played on 4, 5 and 6 November at Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires.

Argentino and Boca are a couple of teams from Argentina's Liga Nacional while Malvin are Uruguayan giants and Winner Limeira are from Brazil.

Sao Paulo will be the site for Group F (11, 12 and 13 November) and that's where Brazilian sides Bauru, Uniceub and Mogi Das Cruzes will be involved, along with Ecuadorians Comunikt.

Mogi Das Cruzes are the host club for Group F and all of those games are to be played in the Ginasio Municipal Professor Hugo Ramos.

Argentina teams have won the Liga Sudamericana on 12 occasions, including three by Atenas de Cordoba (1997, 1998 and 2004), while Brazilian outfits have captured the title six times.

Uniceub are the only side in this season's Semi-Final Round to have won the championship. The Brasilia team prevailed in 2010 and 2013.

"It is a great pleasure for us to announce Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo as venues for the semifinal groups of the 2014 edition of the South American League," said Gerasime Bozikis, the President of the South American Basketball Association (ABASU).

"Having as a host one of the most important venues for basketball in Argentina, with Obras Sanitarias and one of the most passionate fanbase in Brasil with Mogi das Cruzes, is a luxury for our competition.

"Once again we have in this edition important venues in our South American basketball and a broad representation of countries in this semifinal. All that is left for us basketball lovers is to enjoy the next two weeks that we are confident will be of the highest level for our sport."

Which teams, and players, are hot?

Malvin (Group A), Comunikt (Group B) and Bauru (Group C) won all three of their games in the Preliminary Round.

Among the leading players this year are Brazil international Guilherme Giovannoni, who is atop the scoring average charts at 25 points per game, and three-point marksman Ronald Ramon of Winner Limeira.

Ramon, who played for the Dominican Republic at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain, is averaging 10.7 points per game and shooting 54.5 percent (six of 11) from behind the arc.

Malvin have the evergreen Nicolas Mazzarino in their squad.

A key contributor to Italian side Cantu in recent campaigns, the 39-year-old Mazzarino has drilled 12 of his 23 (52.2 percent) attempts from long range for Malvin.

As for the teams that barely made it to this phase of the competition, Argentino de Junin (Group C, 2-1) and Uniceub (Group D, 1-2) clinched second place in their respective groups on tie-breakers.
