Latvia roster down to last 15 ahead of EuroBasket Women

RIGA (EuroBasket Women 2015) - Ainars Zvirgzdins has axed four more players ahead of Latvia's forthcoming preparation camp for EuroBasket Women 2015.

The veteran coach has dispensed with veteran players Zane Jakobsone and Anda Eibele, while there is also no room for Sabine Niedola or rising Kitija Laksa.

However there was confirmation that Anete Jekabsone and Gunta Basko-Melnbarde remain on course for unexpected returns in the wake of their previous decisions to retire from the international stage - since they are both on the remaining 15 name list.

"I thank Anete and Gunta who have now approved participation with their country," stated Zvirgzdins, who is eager to whittle down his roster as quickly as possible.

Reducing the number of candidates is always a difficult and painful process, since the number of team places is limited. - Zvirgzdins

"We will not have much time and therefore it is important as soon as possible to go through these sequences and determine the players we will use at EuroBasket Women - rather than once again examining a wide range of candidates.

"Deciding on the composition takes into account many factors - both competition in certain positions, the players ability to diversify into the team style of play, perform certain functions and their health.

"At the same, any candidates who are not included in the 15, should still be ready to join their country when needed."

Meanwhile, having led Castors Braine to successive Belgian titles as well as the EuroCup Women Final in their rookie season, Zvirgzdins has revealed he won't be extending his stay for a third year.

Latvia preliminary roster for EuroBasket Women 2015: Kate Aizsila, Gunta Basko-Melnbarde, Zane Eglite, Anete Jekabsone-Zogota, Ieva Krastina, Kate Kreslina, Ieva Kulite, Dita Liepkalne, Zenta Melnika, Liene Priede, Aija Putnina, Dita Rozenberga, Anete Steinberga, Ruta Veidere, Kristine Vitola.
