Latvia and New Zealand to play charity game for breast cancer awareness

RIGA (FIBA EuroBasket Women 2017 Qualifiers/2016 FIBA Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament) - As part of a Breast Cancer Awareness campaign, Latvia will be hosting New Zealand at Arena Riga in the country's capital city on Saturday 28 May.

Latvia's Pink Ribbon campaign - chaired by former and first female Latvia President Vaira Vike-Freiberga and current First Lady Iveta Vejone - aims at encouraging women to discuss and have regular health check-ups. They called the event "Check your breasts to live!".

According to the Pink Ribbon Foundation: "Each year 47,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. That is more than five women every hour and sadly the disease claims the lives of around 12,000 women each year."

Our players are going not only to delight fans with a beautiful basketball game but they will also be taking part in social activities which are essential for [our] society. - Latvia head coach Martins Zibarts

And that's the reason a number of celebrated local players - including Kristine Vitola and Aija Putnina - will suit up for Latvia, who will be sporting pink uniforms in tribute to the Breast Cancer Awareness programme.

This is the sixth straight year that basketball, politicians and members of the public have teamed up on social events to raise awareness about effects and prevention of breast cancer.

Talking about the game against New Zealand, Latvia's head coach Martins Zibarts said: "Our players are going not only to delight fans with a beautiful basketball game but they will also be taking part in social activities which are essential for [our] society."

Latvia, who will resume their FIBA EuroBasket Women 2017 Qualifiers in November, beat Belarus in a warm-up game on Tuesday.

The Belarusians will join New Zealand's Tall Ferns and 10 other teams in doing battle at next month's FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Nantes, France (13-19 June), where five tickets to Rio 2016 are on offer.
