Joy for Senyurek and Coksal as Turkey edge near final roster

ISTANBUL (FIBA World Championship for Women) - Turkey rising stars Tilbe Senyurek and Cansu Koksal are in dream land after the duo were handed spots for the FIBA World Championship for Women.

The pair were included in the list of 13 names chosen by head coach Ceyhun Yildizoglu, whose only decision left to make is whether Quanitra Hollinsworth or Lara Sanders are handed the naturalised spot.

Both Senyurek and Koksal will have been left exhilarated at the prospect of making their senior debuts on home soil and also on the global stage.

Teenage center Senyurek will get to operate in the paint alongside the legendary Nevriye Yilmaz and will compete for court time under the hoop with either Hollingsworth or Sanders.

The Syhan native impressed Yildizoglu not only in the preparation camp, but staked her claim with a strong display at the U20 European Championship in Udine earlier this year when she averaged 10.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

Koksal played alongside Senyurek at the U20 tournament in Italy and showed she has what it takes to make the transition and take a step up.

The 20-year-old forward gets her senior debut after being on the radar for a long time, having played at three successive U20 Championship tournaments.

On the flipside of the coin, there was crushing disappointment for Esra Ural, Simay Karaman and Aysegul Gunay who were the three players just edged out in the final shake-up.

The decision perhaps being worse for the latter, since Gunay stepped out at EuroBasket Women in France last year.

All of Turkey's veteran core are included and especially in the backcourt, with Birsel Vardarli, Esmeral Tuncluer, Isil Alben and Tugba Palazoglu providing an almost unrivalled rotation - or at least in terms of experience and know-how.

Turkey squad for FIBA World Championship for Women: Begum Dalgalar, Esmeral Tuncluer, Birsel Vardarli, Quanitra Hollingsworth, Tugce Canitez, Nevriye Yilmaz, Bahar Caglar, Isil Alben, Tugba Palazoglu, Saziye Ivegin, Latoya Sanders, Cansu Koksal, Tilbe Senyurek.

Turkey now head to Minsk in Belarus, where they will face the hosts, China and Spain in a preparation tournament.
