Ingles: We can beat any team out here

GRAN CANARIA (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Australia forward Joe Ingles had an all-around performance with 18 points, four assists and three steals in the Boomers' impressive 82-75 win over Lithuania.

FIBA.com caught up with him afterwards to talk about the game.

FIBA.com: Joe, that's a huge win for Australia, you must be delighted.
Ingles: Yeah it was. We got them in Beijing too, but it's been a long time really. They're a great team and I think the best thing about tonight was we stuck with our game plan and did what we wanted to do. At the end of the day that's what it came down to.

FIBA.com: You had to weather quite the storm in the third quarter, how did you turn the game around?
Ingles: We knew they were going to make a run in the second half at some point, and for the guys to stick together and play our style and hold it together (was great). They're a great team, they were going to do something at some point, and I think in the past that’s where we’ve lost games, we can’t hold that lead and control the run, and I think we did a great job of that tonight.

FIBA.com: Was this coach Andrej Lemanis' fast-paced vision for the Australian style coming to fruition?
Ingles: I thought that was one of our better 40-minute games with Drej. That stuff - pace, poise and penetration - is all coming together. Obviously it takes time, and I think we've got better and better as we’ve gone on.

FIBA.com: You forced Lithuania into 22 turnovers, did you think the disruptive style could be that effective?
Ingles: It's something we've worked on a lot, since Brett (Brown) came in and Andrej has obviously pumped it up a lot more. It's probably not the usual, typical style but I think the team we've got can be really good at it. We've got a lot of long, athletic guys so we can do it, and it showed a little bit against Korea two days ago, and that's what we didn't have in the first game against Slovenia. Today shows when we do it for 40 minutes we can really beat any team out here.

FIBA.com: The third quarter the team lost its pace, stopped getting early post feeds, so do you think there's still room for improvement?
Ingles: Definitely, there's never going to be a perfect game. We got a bit stagnant in the third quarter, they made a run, we didn't want to make mistakes and that hurt us a little bit, a few turnovers. We'll go back and look at how we can get better at, but overall very happy.

FIBA.com: Finally, what do you know about Mexico?
Ingles: I know they've got good beer, I like Corona (laughs)! But they're obviously a good team, they're here for a reason, they've got a couple of really good players who are playing well this tournament so we'll go back and watch the video and do some recovery for the early game tomorrow.
