Great Britain's Stewart moved to tears by funding cut

LONDON (EuroBasket Women 2015) - Great Britain center Azania Stewart has caused a stir on social media after being moved to tears when contemplating the impact of UK Sport opting to withdraw funding for the sport.

Speaking to journalist and basketball advocate Chris Mitchell for national broadcaster BBC, Stewart broke down during a compelling interview which is now drawing huge interest around the world.

However it isn't the headline shedding of tears that is most riveting, but the heartfelt words she uses to describe the phenomenal pressure on the Great Britain players as they prepare to meet with the very real possibility that this could be the end of the road for them.

Despite having qualified for a third successive EuroBasket Women Final Round and having made the second phase of the tournament on both previous occasions, the women are only able to compete this summer due to emergency funding from Sport England.

This effectively saved the team from potential extinction after UK Sport pulled the plug on funding for the GB Basketball programme mainly because of its overriding focus on medal potential.

Sport England's funding is also allowing GB to compete at this summer's U20 European Championship and U20 European Championship Women Division B.

Stewart, who played in the EuroCup Women with Pinkk Pecsi 424 this past season, has received phenomenal support since the clip broke on social media and has also tweeted about the interview via @azania13.
