Ginobili cuts Argentina U19 roster to 14 players

BUENOS AIRES (2015 FIBA U19 World Championship) - With about a month to go before the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship tips off, Argentina coach Sebastian Ginobili has trimmed his roster of players down to 14.

Ginobili and his assistant Ivan Najnudel cut five players from the previous group of 19 prospective players following the team’s third training camp at the CeNARD Performance Center in Buenos Aires.

"We wanted to wait until the end of this camp to start defining the team that will participate in the World Championship. We have left 14 players on the roster and I am trying to form a group mixing players with experience and those who have a good projection for the national team," said Ginobili.

The players cut from the team were  Juan Pablo Arengo, Carlos BuemoAyan CarvalhoMarin Gomez and Alejandro Marinelli.

The remaining 14 players are Andres Barbero, Lautaro Berra, Facundo Corvalan, Lucio Delfino, Martin FernandezMaximo Fjellerup, Ignacio GalardoRodrigo GerhardtIvan Gramajo, Enzo Rupcic, Estefano Simondi, Juan Pablo Vaulet, Jose Vildoza and Fernando Zurbriggen.

Since taking over the team, Ginobili has made a number of changes from the side that finished fourth at the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship to qualify for the U19 Worlds, which will take place from 27 June-5 July in Heraklion (Crete), Greece.

With the departures of Arengo, Buemo, Gomez and Marinelli, only four players are back from last summer's U18 team - Vildoza, Gramajo, Delfino and Gerhardt.

Ginobili did call on five players from the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship team - Zurbriggen, Fjellerup, Delfino, Fernandez and Galardo.

Vaulet is considered one of Argentina's biggest young talents but he missed all of last summer injured. He had previously played at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship and 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship.

Ginobili added four players without any national team experience - Corvalan, Rupcic, Simondi and 17-year-old Berra. He also brought back into the mix Barbero, who last played in the Blue and White at the South America U15 Championship in 2011.

Argentina have been drawn into Group B with Spain, Turkey and China.

Ginobili knows his team will be lacking in height, but he wants to combat that with tough defense and aggressive play.

"I hope our collective strength will supplement our lack of height compared to our opponents, especially the Europeans," he said.

Argentina will depart South America for Europe on 10 June and play in a tournament in Italy from 12-14 June against as-yet undefined opponents. They will then play two friendlies against Serbia in Serbia before moving to Spain for three games, including one against the Dominican Republic. Argentina will head to Heraklion on 22 June and play a final game against the United States on 24 June.
